Historically Fascinating

You may think you know all there is to know about living in Chatham-Kent, but every stone you turn over reveals more incredible history. As one of the oldest communities in Ontario, Chatham was originally founded in 1794 as a military settlement. However, the military use of Chatham never panned out as planned, and the small settlement that was originally planted there slowly grew on its own merits.

What about the name Kent? John Graves Simcoe, one of the original architects of the Chatham military settlement, coined the name Kent in honor of the Kent county of England. The name Chatham was added in homage to the Earl of Chatham, William Pitt the Younger.

The key to Chatham-Kent’s success was a bustling Canadian lumber industry. The dense forests surrounding the settlement were ripe for harvesting, and soon Chatham blossomed into a bustling community. Over time, continued economic and cultural growth in the region gave birth to the incredible city and people we know today!
